Bagh-Shomal Garden
Type: Civic – Cultural – Mixed use
Scale: 90000 sqm
We perceive architecture as the “Layering of Time.” Instead of a radical erasure of the past, our manifesto for Bagh-Shomal is rooted in a dialectic synthesis of three eras: the elegance of the Safavid Garden, the rigid structure of the Pahlavi barracks, and the democratic freedom of contemporary urban life. We reject the “Isolated Object” approach; instead, we propose a “Material Intervention.” By utilizing the Brick-laid Pedestrian Path as a red thread, we stitch the historical Bazaar to this new urban lung. Here, “Brick” is not just a material; it is a “Chronological Tool” that deciphers the latent stories of Tabriz and transforms a military enclosure into a liberated public space.
The design strategy for Tabriz’s Bagh-Shomal is articulated through the integration of historical identity and functional adaptive reuse. The spine of the project is the Brick-laid Pedestrian Path, an urban conduit that extends from the historic core toward the site, facilitating a seamless transition between the old and the new. The project is structured upon three conceptual layers: the Safavid legacy (restoring the water axis), the military heritage (adaptive reuse of existing sheds), and the contemporary layer (social plazas).
.
A key feature is the “Metamorphosis of Military Structures,” where the solid sheds of the Pahlavi era are transformed into transparent cultural hubs and galleries while preserving their tectonic honesty. At the heart of the site, the “Central Koushk” (Pavilion) acts as a belvedere, reinterpreting the Persian Garden’s archetype with a modern vocabulary. This hybrid approach ensures that the park is not a static monument, but a dynamic “Living Heritage” that integrates the soul of the Tabriz Bazaar into a unified, sustainable landscape.
