Younger Uncle House
Type: Residential – House
Scale: 350 sqm
This project was a response to the challenge of designing a permanent residence and villa on a steeply sloping plot with a 13-meter change in elevation. A key requirement from the client was incorporating a specialized garage-workshop for classic cars, which needed to be situated at the entry level.
Rather than placing the building atop the terrain, we chose to embed the main volume into the ground, allowing sections to emerge selectively. This strategy preserves the human scale and neighborhood context while leveraging the climatic potential of the subterranean spaces.
To organize the slope and functions, the project spaces were divided into three core layers: access routes, living areas, and courtyards/voids. Because the garage entrance had to be located at the lowermost level, precluding a conventional courtyard, a continuous staircase was designed. This staircase connects the entry directly to the roof, where the main courtyard is formed. This continuous path creates an external layer for accessing all floors.
The main living areas were positioned alongside this access layer. The remainder of the irregularly shaped plot was dedicated to private courtyards, which function like the house’s respiratory system, ensuring optimal natural light and ventilation.
