On the island of Bumusa, where a hot and humid climate challenges daily life, a project was born from a simple question: How can we build houses that don’t surrender to the heat, but instead befriend the climate?
The project was designed based on a dual strategy: “compact for shade and open for wind.”
We arranged the houses to be compressed in certain areas, creating shaded spaces reminiscent of alleyways in this climate. In other areas, these blocks are spaced apart to form open courtyards that transform the hot southern wind into a cool breeze.
This “alleyway-courtyard” network is the beating heart of our project; a place where spaces breathe with the flow of air.
To connect these houses, a “public platform” was designed on the first floor. It not only provides circulation but also serves as a shaded roof for the public space below.
This lower area is a large, cool “public space” that, thanks to the shade and air circulation, has become an ideal place for social life. In this design, we defined three layers of living: the outer layer exposed to the heat, the middle layer cooled by voids and shadows, and the inner layer that provides a calm and pleasant atmosphere by drawing in the cool air from the middle layer.
This approach offers a new model for living in hot and humid climates; a model that coexists with nature and provides a fresh and enjoyable experience of dwelling in such a region.
