TOKYO MUSIC HALL

Type: Public – Cultural
Scale: 12000 sqm

The Tokyo Music Hall project began with this question: How can we create something more than just a flat surface from a piece of land?

.

We view this project as the “process of transforming the ground into a roof, and then back into the ground.”

.

This idea, by gifting the project’s land to the city, creates a dynamic urban space in the heart of Tokyo. Designed as a public plaza, this space is a venue for urban gatherings and connects people to the busy streets and the adjacent lush garden.

In this design, instead of focusing on the plan, the design process began with the section and a layered approach. The building is shaped in a way that it slopes down from the level of the surrounding commercial buildings toward the ground. This approach not only enhances the urban landscape but also provides a dynamic platform for cultural events. Ultimately, this project transforms the music hall into an active urban center; a place where people and space interact with one another, and music is not just performed in closed halls, but flows through the city and connects with daily life.
