Azadi Courtyard
Type: Public – Cultural
Scale: 3000 sqm
Due to its significance as the most important pilgrimage site in Iran, the Shrine of Imam Reza hosts many collective events. One of the most essential and frequently held events is the congregational prayer.
.
Given the limited capacity of the indoor space, the courtyards are also used for these ceremonies. However, at times, due to weather conditions, being in an open space can be difficult. To encourage people to use the outdoor areas of the complex, especially during a pandemic, we need to provide them with thermal comfort.
The most influential thermal factor in this project is solar radiation, which is usually at its peak during the noon prayer. It is uncomfortable both in terms of light intensity and temperature. Creating a shade, particularly in a dry climate like Mashhad, can lead to a significant temperature difference and naturally prevent glare and other visual discomforts.
